No Child Left Behind
How would you respond to this:
"I really don’t care if I can write well or not, all I want to do is pass this class with a good grade and take my chances in college"?
I teach because I have to. In all the jobs I've had to pay my way through life, only teaching has (as of today) not left an empty feeling. This is my calling; and sometimes I feel that I chose to teach as much as teaching chose me. *Note: The thoughts expressed here are my own and not intended to represent the school or district I work for.

"You won't have to worry about college if you can't pass my class. And if you decide not to work on writing well, you would be better off paying me the thousands of dollars that you will waste in college remedial classes. In the end, it doesn't really matter. My class requires to to write well. Either work on it, or fail."
Not very tackful, but direct and too the point.
If you can't write well, you won't pass this class. If you don't pass this class, you won't graduate from high school. In any situation where you simply 'take your chances,' you'll lose.
If you make the effort to learn to write well, you will have a chance at your future plans. If you don't learn to write well, you will have no chance at all.
You have complete control of whether or not you are successful.
